DOOH Advertising on Screen Networks: What Operators Need to Know
Digital out-of-home (DOOH) advertising is what happens when a screen network stops only showing its own content and starts selling airtime to other advertisers. That shift changes what your infrastructure needs to guarantee.
What changes when you add advertising
Running your own promotional content only requires the content to play — if a slide gets skipped occasionally, it's a minor internal issue. Once an advertiser is paying for a contracted number of plays or a specific time window, "probably played" is no longer good enough. You need scheduling you can trust and proof-of-play records to back up the invoice.
What advertisers expect
Most advertisers buying DOOH airtime expect, at minimum: a guaranteed play count or time window, confirmation the creative actually ran (not just was uploaded), and some sense of the audience or location context (foot traffic, dwell time, screen location type). The first two are directly solved by reliable scheduling and proof-of-play reporting; the third is more about the sales package around your screen locations than the software itself.
Content rotation and priority for paid vs. owned content
A common pattern is prioritizing paid advertiser content within a playlist rotation while still running owned/promotional content in the remaining slots. Weighted repetition in a playlist (playing a higher-priority item more often within the loop) is the mechanism for this — check that your CMS's playlists and scheduling feature supports weighting, not just simple ordered lists.
Handling multiple advertisers across multiple screens
Once you have more than one advertiser, you likely need to target specific creative to specific screens or screen groups — an advertiser paying for placement in one region shouldn't have their creative played network-wide by mistake. Device groups are the mechanism for scoping a schedule to exactly the right subset of screens.
Reporting back to advertisers
Advertisers generally want a report, not dashboard access. Export the relevant proof-of-play data filtered to their campaign's date range and assigned screens — see our proof-of-play reporting guide for what that export should contain.
